Perspective
Yesterday one of my co-workers asked me "How come you're always so cheerful?"

I hear you laughing. Stop it. There was a perfectly good reason for this seemingly-ridiculous question. I was in the middle of giving her a pep talk, providing sage and useful advice. You're still laughing, aren't you? I knew you wouldn't listen.

"Easy, dear co-worker," I said, adjusting my halo. "When [Redacted] has a bad day at work, the House passes a bill granting the President unprecedented spying powers. When [Also Redacted] has a bad day at work, dissident journalists are imprisoned in China. When I have a bad day at work, it's because a woman walked into the office carrying a dead mouse and she is asking for money so that she can bury it."

You are the most awesome ever. Oddly, I do think of you as always being cheerful, in a sharp-edged and not-suffering-fools way. Because you are always looking at things realistically and sensibly, and never complaining about your lot or feeling sorry for yourself, and always working incredibly hard and happy and excited and grateful about your life-adventures and your loved ones, I think of you as one of the most cheerful people know. In a caustic, pragmatic way of course!

I am reminded a little of my childhood, in which I was always worried that if my parents were having a bad week at work, that World War Three was about to break out.

It's been a couple of stressful and depressing weeks at work. The least that I can do for my various and sundry co-workers is to stay relatively cheerful and bring them pastries. I think it may be possible to track the state of worldwide digital civil liberties by monitoring the doughnut consumption in my office. More research is needed.

One might infer from this and recent news events that it's been a pretty rough couple of weeks for [Redacted], as well.

Hang in there. You guys are doing Very Important Work, in my humble opinion, and you have my total support and admiration.

It's been a rollercoaster. We still don't know how it's going to turn out, but the prognosis is not good. [Redacted] has been prepared for the worst case scenario for about a year now. He knows that DC is a sucker's game. I think the rest of us are still kind of hoping that [Redacted] will pull off a miracle.
